Livestock plays an important role in the Indian economy. The gross domestic production through livestock is Rupees Five Thousand million per day; and Veterinarian plays a crucial role in enhancing livestock production through scientific breeding, management and health care.
Indian farmer keeps livestock for production of milk, meat, manure, wool and eggs; besides he uses bullock power for traction and transport. Livestock happens to be a source of income generation at village level. Veterinarian is deeply involved at every stage of animal production and also in its export.
Perhaps, no other scientist is blessed like a Veterinarian who treats animals at the door of the farmer and takes science and technology right at his door.
Dairy animals or pets, ornamental birds or bullocks, zoo animals or laboratory animals, contribution of Veterinarian as a caretaker, can not be forgotten. In food hygiene (milk, meat) as well as in the production of biopharmaceuticals, he plays a key role.
As a service to mankind, his responsibility to identify and control Zoonotic diseases can not be ignored.
It is a matter of pride and record that because of the efforts of Veterinarians India could reach to the highest level of milk production in the world, touching to around 70 million tones in 1997. now, with advancement of science and technology, and using tool of genetic engineering he can produce animals of better production, by cloning.
At village level, Veterinarian happens to be a friend, philosopher and guide to the farmer.
Above all, the real contentment he enjoys is when he sees gratitude in the eyes of the animals, when they are treated, perhaps, rarely seen in the eyes of human patients.

Veterinary profession is noble, thus.
