LAB ANIMALS
This chapter covers the more important diseases of animals used in the
largest numbers for research purposes: mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters,
ferrets, nonhuman primates, and amphibians. Diseases of other domestic
species that are also widely used in research, such as dogs, cats, rabbits,
and chickens, are discussed elsewhere in the manual .
the guide for the care and use of laboratory animals, DHHS, PHS
(NIH, Publication 85-23), is a primary reference for information on
basic principles and standards. In addition, regulations promulgated
under authority of PL 89-544 (1966), as amended by PL 91-579
(1971), PL 94-279 (1976), and PL 99-198 (1985), should be
consulted for detailed federal (USA) requirements.
