New Educational CDs
released
5 new educational CDs have been developed
by Azim Premji Foundation as a part of the Computer assisted
learning initiative. These 5 CDs address specific topics from
Science and Mathematics such as Work, Force, Displacement,
different types of energy, fractions, loss and percentage etc.
There are a total of 14 CDs that have been developed by the
Foundation. More
Learning Guarantee Programme area
coordinator speaks
21st of July 2003 was a very special day
for Govt. Lower Primary School, Benakanahalli, Kudligi Block,
Bellary district. The school was one of the first to be
evaluated under the Learning Guarantee Programme. The Head
teacher, teachers, School Development Monitoring Committee
members, Block Education Officer (Mr. V.S.Jatti) and the
Cluster Resource Coordinator (Mr. Gadadaiah) ensured that all
the school records were made available to the evaluation team
and that the evaluation proceeded without any hindrance. The
community members including the parents of the children were
very excited that the school where their children are studying
is a part of the Learning Guarantee Programme.

Children Develop Local
Content
Chaitra, studying in 7th standard in Govt.
Higher Primary school, Hungenahalli in Malur Taluk, Kolar
District was curious and inquisitive, like any other child of
her age. She wanted to know more about her surroundings,
nature, animal and plant life. Chaitra was very curious about
the ‘BUTTERFLY’…. Is it a bird or an insect, what does it eat
etc. This curiosity was recognized by the Young India Fellow
in the Computer assisted learning centre, who encouraged
Chaitra to learn more about the butterfly by developing Local
Content. More
Computer assisted
learning, now available to many more children in Karnataka
On the same day, another Computer assisted learning centre
was inaugurated in Govt. Higher Primary School, Ravindra
Nagar,Shimoga Taluk, Shimoga District. (Photo of the set of

As of October 1st, out of the 135 new Computer assisted
learning centres, 51 centres have started functioning and the
remaining will open by October 31st 2003.
CD based learning to
children in e seva centres in West Godavari district
West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh has started E seva
kendrams in 46 mandal head quarters of the district. These
kendrams initiated by the district government identifies Self
Help Groups and rural youth who are given training and other
support for starting and managing the centres. There are 46
centres, 15 run by SHGs and others by rural youth. These
kendrams offer a variety of services including collection of
electricity bills, issue of various certificates to the
citizens, receiving and forwarding complaints etc. These
centres will now also be used to provide computer assisted
learning through CDs to children in the age group of 6 – 14
years.
As part of the MoU, Azim Premji Foundation will provide the
educational CDs to these centres, besides providing training
to e seva kendram nirvahaks and RSDP nirvahaks on the use of
CDs for enhancing learning and management support on a need
base at the request of the District Administration

June 2003 wherein 280 candidates were selected after a written

Technical Guide On Accounting And Auditing In

The Institute of
Chartered Accountants of India and Azim Premji Foundation had
organized a two day National Conference in August 2002 in
Bangalore towards defining guidelines for best governance,
accounting and financial reporting in the NPO / NGO sector. As
a way forward, the Research Committee of the Institute has
brought out a Technical Guide on Accounting and Auditing for
Not-for-Profit Organisations. The Technical Guide discusses
the salient features and principal requirements of various
Accounting Standards and the issues that may arise in the
course of the application of the Standards. Also discussed are

The Computer assisted learning centre
initiative, a joint initiative of the Government of Karnataka
and Azim Premji Foundation, has entered the III phase of
expansion with the government approving the setting up of 135
more centres across the state of Karnataka. More

The
International Literacy Institute, located at the University of
Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education in Philadelphia,
USA and Azim Premji Foundation have entered into a
collaborative relationship to respond to the growing need for
human resource development in the field of Elementary
Education and literacy in India. More specifically the common
goals will include inter alia literacy, education issues, new
methods of teacher training, resources and evolution
methodologies, innovative approach through intervention of
technology in learning and evolving more effective teaching
learning methods and materials.
Launch of the Learning Guarantee Programme
Mr.
Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Corporation inaugurated the
Learning Guarantee Programme at Gulbarga on 23rd November
2002.
The programme, a joint initiative of
Government of Karnataka and Azim Premji Foundation covers
nearly 10,000 government primary and higher primary schools in
the 8 North East districts of Karnataka. The 3 year programme
is designed to identify schools that demonstrate “guarantee of
learning”, analyse the success factors and communicate these

Inauguration of new Computer
assisted learning centre at Hebbagodi, Anekal Taluk: Second
phase of the CALC Project begins
A group of young children were ready to
formally start learning on the computers. This school is the
first Computer assisted learning centre out of the 55 new
Centres that will be launched across 11 districts in the state
of Karnataka during the month of November 2002. This is a
joint initiative taken up by Government of Karnataka and Azim
Premji Foundation, Bangalore.
With this addition CALC
in the Government Higher Primary Schools to the 35 CALC which
were started as a pilot, in mid 2001, this initiative
successfully enters the expansion phase.
Dileep
Ranjekar, CEO of Azim Premji Foundation said "We are committed
to catalyzing the process of universalisation of elementary
education in India and very strongly believe that innovative
application of technology can significantly contribute to the
learning of children thereby creating sustained
universalization of elementary education.
Launch of the Learning

expected competencies while ensuring universal enrollment and
attendance. The programme aims at inspiring and motivating
teachers and schools to develop processes that will sustain
Learning Guarantee.
Speaking after handing the first copy of the
brochure on Learning Guarantee Programme to two school
children, a teacher, head teacher and School Development and
Monitoring Committee chairman, Mr. Premji said the only way
the children could be retained is when they find their
existence inside the school gainful, relevant and beneficial
for life. ‘I am looking at the child acquiring necessary
knowledge and life skills to be able to apply thought and to
make informed choices in their life.’
